Memphis to Nashville

Memphis seemed brighter this year.

Main Street just outside our hotel

It seemed not as slithery under the surface. Going down Beale Street where all the blues bars and restaurants were located, it seemed brighter. I saw a store window with a newspaper clipping posted about a curse having been lifted from the city. I do not know about any curses there, but something has changed.

Beale Street
We made our way down Beale Street and paused next to Jerry Lee Lewis' fancy car when Lesa received a Facebook notification from April Beale about the bicycles having arrived and what an impact it had on a little boy's heart. You can read about that here.

Connie celebrated 19 years of sobriety on the day we were in Memphis on Beale Street. That is pretty ironic, hey? Only God! He is funny sometimes.

We ate dinner on Beale where there was an outdoor courtyard with red bricks and black iron patio furniture. To our right was a spiral 3 stories tall leading to a tower cap; a rail-less goat run. A sign said these were flying goats. Patrons tossed bread up to the goats to try to get them to jump off the top but the animals had better sense than the people did. Sparrows flitted about and a skinny orange tabby cat slinked away to our right as two musicians paid tribute to King of the Blues, BB King, and King of Rock and Roll, Elvis. They played other songs as well and were quite talented. We arrrived at the later part of their set, just in time to tip them nicely for a job well done. The music was much better than the food.

We found the statue of Elvis in time to help a family get a photo together. (We later ran into the same family down on Main Street at the ice cream parlor.) Hayley noticed a homeless man about a half block down from Elvis Statue and at first wanted someone to come with her to encourage him and give him something. Then she decided that she would do it on her own. The man did not solicit for any help...he was not bothering anyone, he kept to himself. Connie imagined he must have thought an angel came over to him. We are seeing a lot of growth in Hayley. I know she exhibited a great deal of courage to go by herself (under our watchful eye, of course.)

Back toward Main Street a hungry man asked Connie for her left overs, which she promptly gave happily. She was glad she had something to give him.

It began to drizzle by the time we got back to the hotel and it was dark.

There was a hot tub outside on the 2nd floor roof. Connie, Hayley and I enjoyed that while Lesa stayed behind in the room.

In the morning, I found a seat next to a window to write and post the update about Little Rock. I really enjoyed the alone time while it lasted.

Outside of Nashville on Route 100
The road to Nashville was long but it was SUNNY and we got stuck in traffic...there was a really bad traffic accident on Rt 40 about 40 miles outside the city. We prayed for the affected people and posted on FB we were accepting prayer requests since we could do little else. One of the ladies we met in Spiceland, Indiana asked us to pray for her situation.

Nashville was loud and crowded. There is not much to do there but walk down the main strip, see cowboy boots and hats, souveneirs and bars with country bands. Since it was Friday night, it was especially busy. We ate dinner at Rippy's, a two story restaurant known for its ribs, with tin ceilings and dark stained plywood floors. Our waitress was a tiny young woman who wore cute frilly boots. I pointed out someone to bless. This woman was crouched down on the street stuffingssomething into her backpack. Her arms were as skiny as sticks and her hair dirty and matted. Lesa peered around the corner and said,"You mean that girl who is stuffing stolen goods into her backpack?" She had unopened packages of sheets. OK. Not so much. We headed to the end of the road where the river lay before us and watched a barge load of coal come slowly down stream pushed steadily ahead by a tug boat by Captain Wilson.

It was getting late and we were trying to get together with a friend who has attended a couple of God's Girls Ministry Retreats back in Virginia. After a quick stop at Target to resupply the car for the road trip tomorrow, we met with Marie and talked and laughed and shared stories. She was woken up by the holy spirit at 3:13 am to pray for us. I love how God loves us so much and gives us faithful people who love him and obey him and listen to him.

We head to Charlotte tomorrow.

Bicycles Arrive; Restores Faith for Boy

This is a note from April, the mother of the children our mission trip sent new bicycles to. I have included some of the Facebook comments below her note as they appeared in the original post.

My kids received an Awesome and Amazing surprise in the mail yesterday from some amazing women. They were so excited they had no clue they were coming. First fedex came with two boxes and Isaac saw the word Huffy on the box and went crazy asking why is something with the name Huffy coming here where did these come from mom? So we opened them and they were bikes for Isaac and Anabel. Then about ten minutes later a knock on the door and it was ups with two more bikes these ones for Kaeleb and Zoey. I explained to the kids how our friends that just visited a few days ago wanted to bless us somehow and that GOD put it in there heart to bless you guys with bikes. They were so excited and they all love them so much. Lately Isaac has been doubting that God is real and today while on our way to exchange his bike because it was damaged in shipping we were talking about how amazing of a blessing the bikes are and he looked over at me and told me "Mom I'm starting to believe God is real again that he helped me get a new bike." Thanks so much ladies you did way more then just give some kids new bikes more then you will ever know.

Let Your Light Shine

Little, Rock Arkansas was unlike any of our other destination cities. We pulled off  Route 40 to get to our hotel on Markham and passed homes and businesses along the main drag. She seemed tired. Maybe it was because of the heavy gray clouds overshadowing her. Or maybe it was something deeper. The homes were achy. Over grown bushes surrounded them, taller grass invited homeowner to come out and care for them, pay attention to them, love them. Not many boasted flower gardens or freshly trimmed borders. This in stark contrast to Ohio and Indiana. Here and there commercial buildings were undergoing well over-due renovations. Many of the rest of them were old suburban sprawl buildings and shopping centers that needed a fresh coat of paint, updates and love.

Markham Little Rock from Google maps.

Much work needs done in this city. Christ Little Rock Church  made her presence known throughout the town with billboards dotting the landscape and well placed advertisements in the mall.We did not run into anyone who served the community from there but it was evident they were doing something positive in the area.

After checking in to our hotel, which was near a marketplace and undergoing her own renovations, we made our way to Markham & University Drive, where Park Plaza Mall is located, to get dinner and find someone. We parked on the very top deck and went down into the food court, Forever 21, Vanity (loved the Bohemian hippie chic clothes there) and Clark Shoes. It was Connie and Hayley's turn to scout out and locate someone we could bless in  practical ways.

While waiting in Clark's for the clerk to finish with a foreign couple who kept trying to negotiate and re-negotiate prices with the 17 year old store keeper, Hayley spotted a janitor on the floor below. Connie, too, had thought he was the one earlier when Hayley pointed him out. I never noticed him until then. Later, Hayley and Connie encouraged the man and gave him some money. Promptly, he put it in his mouth, clamped down with his teeth and then shoved it into his pocket. When asked if they could take a picture of him, the man said,"No. It's against company policy, there are cameras all over the place."  I was amused he could accept cash in front of the camera and chomp on it with his teeth but not take a photo.

The Sun room Ceiling at Park Plaza Mall. We missed the fullness of its beauty.
It was dark outside when we were there.

We returned to the hotel and it was then we noticed the beautiful, new room had a defective AC unit. We were transferred to another room down the hallway. The hallway carpeting was fresh and beautiful, with  modern lines and teal colors. There was no paint on the walls and contractors had penciled workman notes along them. Some of these notes were crossed out like a living check list.
"Bathroom ceiling is not painted."
We found the new room easily; the room numbers were taped on the doors using computer paper with Arial Block numbers printed tall and proud. We all noticed a horrible smell everytime the water was used. I thought it smelled like Nair hair removal chemicals. Hayley decided she would not shower in it. I took a camp shower and Lesa reported the smell went away when the water ran for a few minutes.

Before leaving the city for Memphis, Lesa could not shake the need to go back into Clark's for a purse she saw and really liked. This would not ordinarily be a big deal. However, Lesa seldom finds purses she likes. The other day I learned it is not about the candy, its about a person and in this case, it is not about the purse, it is about a person. We went back expectantly and found 3 more people to encourage and bless at Clark's.

Best Customer Service Ever. Clarks. Little Rock Park Plaza Mall. Unpictured: Micah, who should be
nominated for Best Customer Service of the Year Award.

The patient man who waited on us last night was not there. We were greeted warmly by a tall young man sporting a fancy bow tie and a young woman with kind eyes and a sparkly face. Her name is Bright and she has strawberry blonde hair pulled back in a thick braid. Lesa bought the purse as we asked about the man who was there the night before. His name is Micah, a 17 year old homeschooler who won a full blown basketball scholarship to a University out of state. He will be headed to college in the fall. He is a saint, too, with nerves made out of love; his kindness and patience were unlike any kid this age I have ever met in my entire life. Kudos, mom and dad, you are raising an exceptional man.

Lesa went to the car to get a notecard and the rest of us went to Chick-Fil-A to get gift cards. At the Chick-Fil-A counter, I was waited on by a handsome young man with the most amazingly beautiful bow tie. Running into two young bow tie wearers in one hour at one mall, seemed a bit odd to me so I asked about his. He designs and makes them and has a business: 22nd Element Bowties. Not knowing what the 22nd Element is I Googled it later and found Titanium. Well that is appropriate seeing his slogan is,"Giving You the Look of Titanium."

Follow him on Facebook:

It turns out the Clark's bowtie wearer bought his somewhere else but was very familiar with the 22nd Element business man who was working at Chick-Fil-A.

22nd Element Bowties High quality, beautiful. The artist is shown under the umbrella.

See the white spots? They are Marsh Mallow plants.
The root was used to make the original marshmallows we roast over campfires.
It is also a wonderful herbal medicine.

When Connie was standing next to Bright, she felt like the holy spirit was saying to feed her lunch. It turns out that the woman at Clarks was wondering how she was going to eat lunch that day! God provides. I hope Micah has gotten his thank you card with his surprise inside.

More updates later. Heading out of Memphis now going to Nashville.
Love ya
